The season of Thanksgiving carries more than feasts and traditions—it holds the deeper rhythm of gratitude and connection. For many, this time of year means travel: boarding planes, driving long highways, or crossing city lines to gather with loved ones. Yet beyond the logistics of holiday journeys lies an invitation to see travel itself as a spiritual practice. Thanksgiving, and the season that follows, calls us to balance movement with meaning, joy with rest, and community with self-care.

As autumn gives way to winter, daylight narrows and shadows stretch long across the horizon. The natural rhythm of the season invites us to pause, slow our pace, and listen more deeply—to the land, to others, and to ourselves. For travelers, this shift doesn’t mean less adventure; it means a different kind of journey, one rooted in stillness and mindfulness. Whether through warm mineral springs, hushed retreats, or quiet escapes in nature, traveling during the darker months becomes a practice of alignment with the earth’s gentle call to rest.

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
What Is STEP?

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of State that allows U.S. citizens and nationals to register their travel plans and contact information while abroad.  By enrolling, travelers make it easier for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to reach them (or their loved ones) in an emergency, and to send destination-specific alerts or updates.
STEP is especially useful during crises—natural disasters, civil unrest, health emergencies—when quick communication and coordination can make a difference in safety and peace of mind.

Key Benefits for Travelers
Once enrolled in STEP, participants receive:

As October deepens and the days grow shorter, cultures around the world mark a time when the boundary between the living and the departed grows thin. Albert Camus and the Idea that Happiness is an Act of Resistance
Albert Camus, the French-Algerian writer and philosopher, is best known for his exploration of the absurd—the confrontation between human beings’ search for meaning and the universe’s silence. In works like The Myth of Sisyphus (1942) and The Rebel (1951), Camus grapples with despair, rebellion, and the possibility of living authentically in a world without transcendent answers. But nestled within his philosophy is something often overlooked: a radical insistence on happiness, not as naïve optimism, but as an act of resistance.

Where speed is often celebrated in our society, travel can sometimes feel like another race—packing itineraries to the brim, rushing from landmark to landmark, and measuring success by how much we’ve managed to “see.” Yet, the most memorable journeys are rarely the ones where we sprinted. They’re the ones where we lingered: over a meal, a conversation, a sunset. This is the essence of slow travel—an approach that values depth over distance, presence over pace.
