Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
What Is STEP?

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of State that allows U.S. citizens and nationals to register their travel plans and contact information while abroad.  By enrolling, travelers make it easier for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to reach them (or their loved ones) in an emergency, and to send destination-specific alerts or updates.
STEP is especially useful during crises—natural disasters, civil unrest, health emergencies—when quick communication and coordination can make a difference in safety and peace of mind.

Key Benefits for Travelers
Once enrolled in STEP, participants receive:
  • Email alerts and updates about security, health, weather, or other conditions relevant to their destination country.
  • The U.S. embassy or consulate obtains itinerary and contact details, which helps them locate or assist travelers in emergencies.
  • In urgent situations, the embassy may be able to notify you or your emergency contacts more efficiently.
Because the program is free and voluntary, it’s a low-effort way to add a layer of protection while abroad.

How to Sign Up & Use STEP
Enrolling in STEP is straightforward:
  1. Visit the STEP site (through MyTravelGov) and sign in or create an account (via login.gov).
  2. Fill in personal information, including name, date of birth, citizenship.
  3. Add your travel itinerary: destination country, arrival and departure dates, and any local contacts (for example, program coordinators or lodging).
  4. Choose to subscribe to traveler alerts for your destinations.
  5. If your travel plans change (new country, longer stay, etc.), update your profile so your alerts and contact info remain current.
The process generally takes only a few minutes when you have your trip details ready.

Best Practices & Tips for Travelers
  • Enroll well in advance: The sooner your itinerary is registered, the more lead time you’ll have to receive alerts before travel begins.
  • Include all destinations: If your trip spans multiple countries or regions, register each leg so you receive relevant, location-specific notices.
  • Maintain accurate contact info: Ensure your email and phone number are current and reachable internationally.
  • Update changes immediately: If your plans change (e.g. adding a country, extending stay), log into STEP and revise your itinerary to stay enrolled in the right alerts.
  • Share with family or companions: Let someone you trust know that you’ve enrolled and provide them the trip overview so they too can help if needed.

Why STEP Matters in Today’s Travel Landscape
In an increasingly unpredictable world—where weather events, political protests, health crises, or sudden disruptions can strike without warning—STEP offers a practical tool to stay ahead. Many travelers find comfort in knowing that U.S. embassies are more able to reach them in a crisis.
While STEP doesn’t replace personal responsibility—staying aware of local conditions, following embassy travel advisories, and exercising caution—it complements them by enhancing communication paths and giving authorities a means to respond more effectively to unforeseen events.
