Exit off Rte. 93 on your way north towards Alamo onto Kane Springs Road and you'll find yourself headed through gorgeous mountain valleys on wide dirt roads. The road leads to Elgin Schoolhouse and the scenic highway through Rainbow Canyon that takes you by Kershaw-Ryan State Park into Caliente, NV. Fun fact: I learned from a native to Caliente that it's pronounced "kally-annie". Yup. I test it every time I go through town.. stop at a gas station and ask what town you're in to confirm for yourself!
The dirt road is accessible by any vehicle. We were in my Jeep Wrangler, but I'd feel perfectly safe in my husband's Dodge Challenger on this road. It's very well graded. It's also quite secluded and I'm figuring seldom used. We only saw one other vehicle out there the whole ride through. The next time you're headed to Caliente or up to Cathedral Gorge State Park, I recommend taking a detour through Elgin and Rainbow Canyon on Kane Springs Rd.
